You can now add carbamazepine (Tegretol) to the list of drugs that can interact with grapefruit juice.

Grapefruit juice interacts with many drugs...lovastatin (Mevacor)...most calcium channel blockers...triazolam (Halcion)...oral midazolam (Versed syrup)...and cyclosporine.

Grapefruit inhibits cytochrome 3A4 enzymes in the GI tract. This inhibits the metabolism of carbamazepine and other drugs in the GI tract...allowing more of the drug to be absorbed.
