Colazal (KOL-a-zal), a new drug for ulcerative colitis
Salix Pharmaceuticals is now marketing Colazal (KOL-a-zal), a new drug for ulcerative colitis.
Colazal (balsalazide) is broken down by bacteria in the colon to release mesalamine and an inert compound.
Asacol and Pentasa are delayed-release mesalamine products that rely on the emptying rate of the stomach and pH of the GI tract. Some is released before reaching the colon and is absorbed systemically.
