Fish oils modestly reduce mortality and hospitalizations in patients with systolic heart failure. Treating 56 patients with fish oils for four years seems to prevent one death compared to placebo.
The omega-3s in fish oils might have antiarrhythmic effects and help prevent sudden death. They might also reduce inflammation and other factors that exacerbate heart failure.
